All Amateur Radio Operators must be

licensed by the Country in which they reside.

U.S. Amateur Radio Operators are licensed by the

Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

There are currently three levels of Amateur Radio License:

 • The "entry level" is the Technician Class License

Technician Class licensees have access to a limited amount of the amateur radio spectrum, but included are the entire VHF and UHF bands, with some privileges in other bands. The test for Technician Class mostly involves FCC rules affecting operating practice, bands and safety. Little technical knowledge is required.

• The middle level is the General Class License

General Class Licensees enjoy use of most of the amateur radio spectrum, with a few limitations. The test for General Class includes more technical aspects of radio, propagation causes and some electrical theory.

• The top level is the Extra Class License

Extra Class Licensees enjoy use of the entire amateur radio spectrum and communications modes. Candidates for the Extra Class have to know more electrical and electronic theory, be able to calculate answers to technical questions and be well-grounded in propagation, band limits and related topics.

The Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club conducts FREE HAM RADIO EXAMS monthly, and "on site" testing is available for limited-mobility persons.

Amateur Radio Exams are conducted by a team of Club members who serve as accredited "Volunteer Examiners." Exams are held at 6:15 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Lee County EOC, 2675 Ortiz Avenue, Fort Myers. Contact Larry Stiles WF4LS at (239) 369-7719 or E-mail him at: WF4LS@arrl.net, for more information. Reservations are appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome!

TRAINING CLASSES

The Club also holds Training Classes for people who want to qualify for the Technician Class License. These classes are typically held quarterly at the Lee County EOC. Contact Larry Zimmer W4LWZ, at W4LWZ@arrl.net to register or for more information. There is no charge for the Class.

AND, from time-to-time, the Club holds Training Classes for people who want to qualify for the General Class License. (Ditto above.)  NOTE: The Club does NOT hold Extra Class Training, but some members will help anyone who needs help qualifying for the Extra Class License.
